How to sew on your binding using mock mitered corners. Though it may look hard to do at first glance, once you have mastered mock mitered corners, you won't want to sew on a binding any other way. Be patient and refer to the illustrations. It's easier than you think!

Note: Use 1/4" Seam Allowances

1. Fabric cutting requirements:

  • The 10" quilts use one strip of fabric at 2 1/4" x 44" for the binding
  • For the other quilts, the binding strips are cut in 2 1/2" widths

Measure the outside edges of your quilt and add approximately 5 inches extra for corners and the end overlap. After you have determined the length needed for your quilt, piece together the fabric strips with bias seams (see illustration). Trim seam to 1/4" and press seams open.

2. With wrong sides together, press the binding in half lengthwise.

3. With your quilt's design side up, place binding at bottom center, raw edges even, and sew through all layers using a 1/4" seam. Stop 1/4" from the end of your first edge (you may want to mark this stopping point with a straight pin). Refer to illustration.

4. Slightly remove quilt from under presser foot and turn the quilt to begin the second edge. Fold binding as shown, with the first fold at a 45 degree angle, raw edge of binding extending straight with the second edge of quilt.

5. Next, fold binding down so that top fold is even with first edge of the quilt and the raw edge of the binding is even with the second edge. Slip the quilt back under your presser foot and continue sewing, again stopping 1/4" from the end. Repeat folds and continue until you are a few inches from your starting point.

6. Trim off the excess binding leaving a 1/4" overlap, then stitch to the end of the overlap and backtack.

7.  With design side up, press binding toward outside of quilt, gently pressing into the corners. Turn the quilt over, fold the binding down and pin so that the binding will just cover the machine stitching lines. Fold corners to meet diagonally and pin in place. Hand stitch and press.
